I am a student that has incoming < $20000 am trying to use TurboTax Freedom via https://turbotax.intuit.com/taxfreedom/ to file my taxes. But once I login, it shows Turbo Tax Free File below the icon on the left. Is Turbo Tax Freedom same as Turbo Tax Free File? I read that Freedom has more features than Free File. Am I missing something?
Intuit has elected not to renew its participation in the IRS Free File Program and will no longer be offering IRS Free File Program delivered by TurboTax. You may still qualify for other IRS Free File offers by visiting http:www.IRS.Gov/freefile. Or you can visit www.turbotax.com to see available TurboTax offerings.
Free File is the IRS Free File Alliance, which is TurboTax Freedom. You are correct that there is a difference between this and the regular TurboTax Free Edition (Freedom has potentially more features but is more limited to who can use it). Since it says Free File, it sounds like you are in the right place. Is it a blue-green icon like the one showing on the Freedom webpage?
But, you do need to make sure that you make a completely different username than a normal TurboTax account. Because if you had a regular Free Edition account made up before you logged in there, then it will log you into the Free Edition.
Thank you so much Anthony! Once logged in, the icon is not blue-green. It is a red circle with a check mark in it. It says "turbotax Free File". I do qualify for the "TurboTax Freedom" as I am a full time student with income < $17000 in 2018. Also, I had submitted my tax return last year using turbotax freedom (or that' what I thought it was), but it pulled my previous year's values also into this.. So, as it is not blue-green icon, do you think I may have actually landed up with TurboTax Free file edition and not Freedom even last year? Should I create a new login and start from scratch? Thanks again.
It looks like they may have changed the screen layouts since the last time I was in Freedom. I just tested it for you and created my own new log in. The Freedom page actually looks exactly the same as the Free Edition (it used to look slightly different) and both say Free File. So, if you know that you used Freedom last year and you logged back into the same account thru the Freedom website, then you should be good to go
