I live in Dearborn MI. Work in Detroit. Do owe 2.4% resident city tax or 1.2% nonresident tax just? Does the city consider Dearborn part of Detroit since Detroit Metro?

Wondering what defines residency of detroit?

You will only owe non resident tax (1.2%) if you live in Dearborn. Listed below are the residency rules for City of Detroit returns:

Residency and Determining Which Form You Must File

You only have one residency status, and that status determines which form you will file.

  • If you lived inside the City of Detroit for all of 2017 (January through December), you are a resident of Detroit. File a City of Detroit Resident Income Tax Return (Form 5118).

  • If you lived outside the City of Detroit for all of 2017 (January through December), you are a nonresident of Detroit. File a City of Detroit Nonresident Income Tax Return (Form 5119) if you earned income in the City of Detroit.
