I live in a hurricane affected area of Florida. Do I have to file an extension to file my taxes for 2024 or is it automatic?

Yes.

Hernando county has an extension to file and to pay taxes for 2024 until May 1, 2025.

Please read this IRS document.

If you need more time to file after May 1, you'll need to file an extension.

Please read this TurboTax Help topic for instructions on how to file an extension.

So do I have to file a form to extend my deadline or do I just file my taxes by 1 May 2025?

No, you do not have to file an extension if you are in a qualified disaster area from a hurricane.  This is an automatic extension.

It would be incredibly helpful if TurboTax could automatically recognized that you live within these zones by your address. I’m a Florida resident and do not have income from another state in 2024, but TurboTax has been sending MANY automatic email reminders that are very pushy about filing by the April 15th deadline. These emails are very stress inducing, causing me and everyone I know to panic search for answers on the internet. There is no mention of these automatic extensions for Florida taxpayers or (other states/regions with auto extensions) anywhere on the review and checkout pages. It’s hard to trust that TurboTax will not also automatically claim I owe interest on tax payments made before the May 1st deadline. Please fix this system, everything else on this site is incredibly streamlined, why can’t this be added as feature?
