My son is attending college. He needed a laptop for his computer science classes. I gave him a 1000 dollars towards his laptop. Can I claim the 1000 on my taxes.

If the computer was not required by the school, then you can not take it off your taxes.  You could use it as a justifiable expense on a 529 plan distribution.

if the computer was required by the school, then it effectively adds to Box 1 of the 1098-T.

Where did you put in the $1600 that caused a dollar for dollar credit for the computer? that can't be right

Your son cannot claim any educational expenses because he is your dependent.  You must claim anything.

Did you receive and input the 1098-T form?  That is a requirement to take any educational related credits.

if your income is over a certain threshhold ($180,000 for joint), then it won't matter as you income is too high to be eligible for any tax relief.

does that help?
