I just turned 18 in july and have had a job since August I was wondering if my mom could claim me for 8 months and I do my own taxes for the other 4?

There is no such thing as being claimed for part of a year. You are either a dependent or you are not.  At your age, you can still be claimed as a dependent on your parents' tax return.  You can file your own return, but in Personal Info you must indicate that you can be claimed as a dependent on someone else's return.
