I just installed turbo tax 2023 desktop and am not able to save my tax file. How do I save a new file? I am getting an error that the file does not exist.

Are you on Windows or Mac?  Or in the online version by mistake.  That happens a lot.  Somehow people get routed to the Online version instead of the installed Desktop program.  If you just installed it have you started a return yet?

I am having the same issue - How do I save a new file? I am getting an error that the file does not exist, and I on the Windows desktop app.  Help!

To save your return in TurboTax Desktop:

  1. Open your return in TurboTax.
  2. Select File in the top right corner
  3. In the dropdown that appears, select Save or Save as…, as appropriate
  4. Select the folder you want to save your return in

Can you run the updates under the 'Online' menu tab at the top left screen? @pauldughi

I just updated yesterday.  I am able to save to Desktop folder, just not the default under Users/Documents/Turbotax.  What is the solution?

You are commenting on an older thread. Are  you not able to save your return to a different folder? I'm not sure what you are having issues with.

This is issue is the same as described above, this thread does not seem old to me, and this thread is not marked closed.

My solution is to save to another folder, like Desktop, then move it to the default Users/Turbotax folder.

This is bug and has never happened to me before, long time customer.

Under File > Save As > I  always save my tax file to my Desktop.

After tax season, I drag it into the folder where I want to store it (Users/Documents/Turbotax)

Once I have done this the first time though, every time I close the return, it then automatically saves to my Desktop.

This may be what you are encountering.

There is no File / SAVE AS. I have downloaded Mac desktop version 2024 taxes

I think Mac says Duplicate instead of Save As under File.

Agree, but it HAS happened to me multiple years in the past.  As I vaguely recall it has something to

do with permissions set up on files or directories by Wintows / Turbotax when turbotax is installed.

MIGHT work correctly if you installed it in whatever directory the turbotax testers QA folks 🙂 used when

they tried a single possible destination :-).  Sorry to be snarky.

I stumbled my way through it in years past (again never finding an official answer that was helpful).

I'll try to do better this year and update with a comment here if I find a true fix (rather than the

workaround described here.  Thanks again for this comment (which I just thumbed-up).

Take care all.
