I have not been employed during the past year. Do I still need to file?

If you had no taxable income, you do not have to file. If you received state unemployment, it should be reported to you on 1099-G, and it is taxable.

Being single means that the other responses tell you all you need to know.  If you were married at this time, there are other reasons to file.

Then the possible other reasons do not apply for you.

There are lots of kinds of income that need to be reported other than employment earnings.  TurboTaxCathi mentioned unemployment insurance.  But others include gambling, investment earnings, withdrawals from an IRA or 401k, pension payments, rental income.  So..lots of unemployed people have to file a tax return.
