I have no wages or w2's. Why does my return show line 1 income?

Lne 1 is also used for Scholarship income and other types of income.  Scholarship income would show letters of SCH to the left of the amount.  Other non-wage types of income have other letter abbreviations.  If you add yours here in comments, we'll give you the definition of those eitters.  

Of course, the first thing you want to double check is that you did not enter the wrong form of income under the W-2 section.

No letters indicated. However found it to be a 1099R for 401k refund, which I thought was included in l.4 IRA distributions.  Thank you.
