From California FTB:
"Form FTB 8453-OL, California Online e-file Return Authorization for Individuals, is the signature document for self-prepared individual e-file returns. By signing this form, you declare that the return is true, correct, and complete. Additionally, you authorize the electronic transmission of the return to the Franchise Tax Board (FTB) and the execution of any designated electronic account settlement. The form does not serve as proof of filing an electronic return - the acknowledgement containing the date of acceptance for the accepted return is that proof.

After you e-file your return, you must retain the following documents for the California statute of limitations period:
CA efile, message is sign and date Form 8453-OL within 1 day of acceptance. Turbotax language on page says Do not mail this form to the ftb. ????????????????????????????
Correct, see the post right above yours. Long ago, the 8453 had to be mailed in for every e-filed return. CA has figured out they don't really want all those forms but they want you to still sign it instead of your tax return and keep it.
Hello I just filed taxes for first time. I filed through turbotax free efile. I created a pin since I hadn't filed before. Turbotax did sign the form 540 on my california tax return, as well as federal tax return. However, there is no signature or date on the form 8453-ol on my state return. Should I be worried? It says to sign within 1 day but doesn't say if I need to resend it either electronically or by mail.
No need to worry. You just want to keep form 8453-ol for your records.
Hello, thank you for replying to my previous question on the disccussion post. I had one more question if you'd be able to answer. I filed and paid both my federal and state taxes late. I assumed the extension for the 2025 CA Wildfire was automatic so I did not specifiy a special circumstance. My return has been accepted and funds have been withdrawn from both state and federal. Should I ammend and add the special circumstance (if so how would I) or just wait until i get a late penalty notice from both federal and state? Thank you.
