I have been filing as head of household. I was told I get a bigger refund if I file as a single mother, So have I been filing wrong?

No, you have been filing correctly. Head of Household status allows you to claim your children as dependents. This is the same as single mother filing status. The other status is merely Single, which does not include the deductions and credits for your kids.
