I was referred to this website by TurboTax customer service because when filling out my tax return on the TurboTax, it would not allow me to file my tax return because my wife is not a US citizen but rather a Mexican citizen and therefore, she does not have a SSN. After looking online in the forums for TurboTax, I saw that filing my tax return online with TurboTax would not be possible and I would need to print out my tax return and indicate "NRA" for non-resident alien in the space for SSN and then physically mail it to the IRS. So, I asked TurboTax customer service to call me to confirm if this was truly my only option. I was told I could use this website in order to avoid having to file my tax return by mail. However, upon entering this website, it seems to me that this website is specifically only for the use of non-resident aliens and the like, and not for United States citizens who are married to non-resident aliens. The problem with this is if my wife were to fill out this website and submit the required file, wouldn't I still need to submit my own tax return? Which would inevitably mean I need to print out my tax return and file it, which would render what my wife did with this website as useless. I am rather confused and any clarification at all would be very helpful, feel free to ask any questions you need.
Unfortunately electronic filing is reserved for those with social security numbers or ITINs. If you are just waiting for her to be approved then I would apply for an ITIN and wait til you receive it to file the return. If you can't wait or if the system is delayed (which, let's face it, it usually is) then unfortunately you will have to mail the return.
Thank you for taking the time to respond to me, Is the method I described in my post the correct procedure to mail it?
Yes, that is the correct procedure to mail the return in and print NRA in the place of your wife's SSN.
