I have a 1099-Misc. only box 7 is filled out. Do I need to file self employed even though a company is writing the checks? It’s just a side job.

It depends.

 

If you are not claiming any expenses associated with this side job, you can potentially just report the income.  But most likely, it sounds like it will need to be treated as self-employment income since the issuing company completed the information for Box 7.
