I have a 1042-S, income code 17. How do I enter this information?

I have already filed my return electronically, but I've now received a 1042-S in the mail. Can I amend my return to include this new information, and if so, how?

I am currently a resident alien.

Form 1042S does not need to filed with your income tax return unless you are filing as a resident alien.

Code 17 is for payments for personal services performed by an independent contractor as contrasted with those performed by an employee. This includes payments that are subject to the business profits article of a treaty.  If you file a 1040, you would want to include the income as self-employment income.

Fill out Form 1042 and then mail it to the address specified in the form instructions.

Hello,

I have a 1042-s income code 17 and I’m a resident alien for 2021 tax. How can I report that form using TurboTax?

Code 17 of Form 1042-S will be entered as self-employment income. Please follow these steps:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on "Search" on the top right and type “self-employed”
  3. Click on “Jump to self-employed”
  4. Select "Other self-employed income, includes 1099-K, cash, and check" on the "Let's enter the income" screen
  5. Enter "Cash" as type of income and the amount received

Please see What is the self-employment tax? and  What self-employed expenses can I deduct? for additional information.

Where should I add the withheld?

Just for clarification, I am not from the USA. I have a J2 visa.
