I have 2 state employer ids on one w-2. it will not let me file. How do I fix this?

I work for 2 Companys that use the same payroll company. On my w-2 the payroll company is my employer. Each company I work for has a different state id on my W-2. Turbo Tax will not let me E-file

Is your income from two different jobs (two different employers added together?  Even if the two different companies use the same payroll company, each employer should have its own W2 form.

The payroll Company Is my employer on my w-2. The Companys use the payroll company to pay their employees.

Both of the incomes are combined for federal but broken down separately for state. It might be a Ca rule.

I don't know why you would have two different state ID numbers, but as long as you report the correct income it should not cause a problem with your tax return processing. You can try using the same state ID number for both entries and if your tax does not change you should be able to file it that way.

Is that the best way? Given you are altering who paid you what amounts to the IRS? Especially if the employer is also claiming those wages? I have the same issue right now.

Short of getting a "corrected" W2 from your employer/payroll companies, then you can either enter them separately or together.  YOUR total wages and withholding will be correct.

That is not accurate. I have the same problem and indeed Turbotax does NOT allow to fill if your employer has 2 different state IDs

You can have multiple state IDs in boxes 15-20.   One EIN per w-2.  Each employer EIN should have its own w-2.  @None33

Does not work. One EIN, 2 same state ID crashed the system in a loop. Cannot file. Live support cannot do anything about that neither.

Please make sure you are entering one W-2 and then adding each state in that same W-2. You cannot enter two separate W-2s for the same employer simply to add another state.

In the state ID field you select which state and then the identifying state number has some criteria that must be followed.

  • No letters and no dashes.
  • You can use the federal EIN if the state numbers are causing an issue. Enter the number, do not use a dash or space.

As indicated by @DawnC, there are thousands of employees who work in different states for the same employer and this functions correctly in TurboTax if the protocols noted above are used.
