I had a question regarding the alternative minimum tax. Do I need to pay this on top of my standard taxes?

I am being told by the IRS that I need to pay both, but that is not what I'm finding when I search on it.

Yes, AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax) is in addition to your regular tax. It taxes items that are not normally taxed and disallows certain deductions for calculation purposes. If the tax that is calculated on Form 6251 is higher than your regular tax, you will have to pay the difference. For more detailed information, please click here
