asked:  "I got my federal tax return but I didn’t get my medicare and ssn amount withheld. since being an non resident alien we should get that back."

I can get someone familiar with international filing situations to assist you in this forum.  But first, you need to provide some more information.

You said you are a "non-resident alien".  Did you use TurboTax to file a tax return?    TurboTax can only prepare returns for USA citizens and "resident aliens for tax purposes."   TurboTax cannot prepare Form 1040NR/NR-EZ for non-resident aliens, but has an affiliate partner that can.    So let's verify first how you are classified for tax purposes to see if you are indeed a non-resident alien.

  1. What country are you from?
  2. When did you first come to USA, and how long have you been here?
  3. What visa are you under?
  4. Are you married?

When you answer those questions, I can ask someone familiar with international filing to assist you further.  If it turns out that you are a non-resident alien and used TurboTax by mistake to prepare the wrong type of tax return, they can also advise you on how to correct that situation.

In the meantime,  as for your question about Social Security and Medicare taxes, also please review this IRS article:

And if a student/scholar/teacher/researcher/trainee, see this IRS article:
