I got married in December 2019 and we didn't live together before that. Are we considered "unmarried" and therefore can we file as single?

No, if you were legally married on the last day of the year, December 31, 2019, then you are considered to have been married for the whole year.  You cannot file 'single' returns for 2019.

You would either file Married Filing Joint, or Married Filing Separate.
