I filed for unemployment in December 2017 but didn't get my first check till January 2018 do I have to put that in my taxes this year?

You would claim the unemployment in the year that you received it. Your state will send you a 1099-G which will let you know the amount that they paid and for what year. If you didn't get your first check until 2018, you do not need to report that on your 2017 return.
