I don't recall paying for filing a state return last year. Why is there a charge this year?

It depends.  You may have qualified for Free Edition last year and this year, your tax circumstances have changed so you will need to upgrade.  For more information on this, please see the Help Article: Why Do I Have to Upgrade from Free Edition?

Nine states do not have state income tax. Turbo tax makes two versions of their annual software; one includes one state income tax (if you owe in more than one state, you pay for the additional software) and one does not include a state. In my area, there is about a $10 difference in the two products. I'm going to assume that last year, you purchased the production that contained a state return. If you need a state return, it is SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive to purchase the product that includes the state. Hope this helps:)

@Richgirl08  That is only for the Desktop program and only for Deluxe version.  There are 2 versions of Deluxe in the stores. One with the state download and one without.  All higher versions come with a free state program download.

The original poster seems to be asking about the Online browser version.  State is a separate charge in all Online versions except the Free Edition.
