If I go back to my original 1040 and access Schedule SE line 8a, it has a drill down button. That takes me to my W2 which shows 142800. Also line 8a will not allow me to update. Are there situations where you do not use the 142800 from your w2 on line 8a? Seems odd, the new schedule SE from my extra income uses the 142800 max on line 8a and fills that in on line 8a but the original SE for my wife's income does not. What am I missing? seems it should be the same on both Schedule SEs. Thank you
here is what Line 8a says:
Total social security wages and tips (total of boxes 3 and 7 on Form(s) W-2)
and railroad retirement (tier 1) compensation. If $147,000 or more, skip lines
8b through 10, and go to line 11
did your wife's SS wages and tips exceed $147,000? then box 8a would be blank by design.
Does your wife have W2 income also? Box 8a comes from W2 box 3. Schedule C and SE is per person. HerSE won't be the same as yours. So make sure each W2 and Schedule C is assigned to the right person or it will be messed up.
Thank you, I thought it was for our joint income. Let me recheck as I thought it was pulling up my w2. Maybe I got something linked incorrectly on hers. Makes sense then as she did not have that much income.
Ok, I reviewed it again. On drill down for line 8a on sched SE, it seems to show what W2s are available. Mine is the only one available as she did not receive a W2. So I believe everything is correct as she did not get a W2 and did not make the 142,800. Thank you for the information and clearing up my confusion.
