My mom just gets social security. I filed her as my dependent on my 2019 return so she never received any stimulus payments. I guess I could file her as my dependent again on my 2020 return. But could I leave her off of my 2020 return and she file her own 2020 return showing that she never received any stimulus payments? That way she could get the recovery rebate credit? And how much would she be eligible for on the recovery rebate credit? $600 or $1800? And would she show her social security income on the return if she can file? Thanks!
If she is not your dependent in 2020, she can file your own tax return to receive both stimulus payments as the Recovery Rebate credit. For completeness, she will report her social security benefits but they will not be taxable. She can e-file her return and it will be accepted.
