I can't properly submit my return. The box for the IRS pin number in the app is only 5 digits long and my pin is 6 long

In order to efile, you must enter in the 2018 AGI OR  the 5 digit PIN from the 2018 return which is a number you picked to represent your efile signature.

**If the field is blank, just enter any 5-digit number. The same goes for your spouse if you're filing jointly.

And if you see a prefilled 5-digit number in this field, you can either leave it alone or re-enter a number you like better. It really doesn't matter.

The PIN field originally prefilled with the 5-digit code from last year.  However, my taxes were rejected.  I tried changing the PIN fields to my own, made-up 5-digit code and resubmitted.  It was rejected again.  The PIN #'s we received for 2019 were 6-digits and do not fit in the field.  How can I electronically submit my taxes?

Having wiped it out by entering something else, try to recover  that 5-digit code from last year.

Otherwise you're out of luck.

If you get it back (or you wrote it down separately), make sure the AGI field is EMPTY, not zero or some other amount. It will work unless you are being  REJECTED for some other unrelated reason.

PS

You can't put a 6 digit PIN in a 5 digit box.

@marks4    This is a post from 2 years ago...so many links are not active from that long ago

ANYHOW ......

Assuming you have received a 6-digit IP PIN for 2021 taxes.......

The 5-Digit regular PIN and the 6-Digit IP PIN go in different places in the program

The 6-Digit IP-PIN must FIRST be entered on the Federal "Other Tax Situations" page

( and you will still need your regular 5-Digit PIN, or your AGI from last year, during the final regular filing steps).

Try pulling up the copy of the return where it is for review, and enter the number in the proper place on the return, then save the return. That seemed to work for me, it saved the number when I went back in.  I haven't  had my return accepted yet, but it seemed to work.

If you are referring to the IRS Identify Protection PIN, that is entered in a different location from the e-file pin.  To enter the Identity Protection PIN in TurboTax online, follow these steps:

  1. Click Other Tax Situations from the left side panel
  2. Scroll down to Other Return Info, Click Start next to Identity Protection PIN
  3. Answer Yes to "Did anyone in your family get an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS for this year's taxes?"
  4. Add PIN for each member that received a PIN
  5. Click Done
