I am using Turbotax Premier. I am on the "Enter the property taxes you paid in 2018" and the input fields are locked. It will not let me type into these fields.

I'm having the same problem with TurboTax Premier for 2019.   I can enter other property taxes (for my vacation house and other property I own), but not the amount for my personal residence.    There is no indication that the number should be coming from somewhere else.      ANYONE OUT THERE who can offer some guidance?

Thanks  🙂

Did you enter property tax paid on the 1098 screen?  If so, the program is letting you know that it already has that information.

Thanks for the response.  I do not have a 1098.  There is no mortgage on the property, and I don't escrow taxes.   I pay the tax bills when they are due twice per year.

Yes, I looked up the screen.

Click Federal

Deductions &  Credits

Scroll down to "Your Home" and click Show more

Scroll down to "Property (Real Estate) Taxes" and click Start

The screen says "Enter any additional property tax you paid in 2019.

Here you can enter "additional property taxes that you haven't told us about"

So it is asking for any additional tax, not additional properties.

Not the way I would word it, but that is where you enter the property taxes on your main home. (not necessarily an additional home, there is a second line that is listed as "Additional homes or land" )

Again, I think they do not want people to enter a 1098 with the taxes reported on that form AND THEN see this screen and enter the SAME amount a SECOND time.

I figured it out.   I had to double-click on the field and enter the value directly into the tax form (not the TurboTax step-by-step box).   Turns out I had a net operating loss in my 2018 return, so TurboTax was indicating I qualified for a State of MI property tax credit based upon my negative taxable income.  That was not valid, as the State of MI doesn't recognize a NOL as reason to lower one's income to qualify for what is normally a tax credit for lower-income people. So, I had to delete the primary residence property tax value from my 2018 return so it didn't flow to the State of MI return.  IT was OK since I took the standard deduction.   However, that locked up the input field in the step-by-step process and carried over to TurboTax 2019.   Not sure why.  I hope it isn't going to be that way in all future years!.

I do not have a 1098 there is no mortgage on either property.  I pay the tax bills when they come in each year.  It is VERY FRUSTRATING NOT TO BE ABLE TO ENTER THE NUMBERS!!

You should be able to enter your property tax without a 1098 form.

  1. Open your return
  2. Click on Show more next to Your Home in the Deductions & Credits section
  3. Click on Start/Revisit next to Property (Real Estate) Taxe
  4. Follow instructions on screens.
