I am unable to start a new return. TurboTax closes once the "Start a New Return" is selected.

How many returns are you filing?

I am using 2023 TurboTax, desktop version. I was able to create a return for myself & my wife. However, when I tried to create a new return for dependents for their summer job, I am not able to. Last year I was able to create returns for them.  Whenever I click/select the blue icon within TurboTax (Start a new Return). TurboTax attempts to start a new return but TurboTax closes. I have tried rebooting, but no luck.

Try running TurboTax as the administrator. Here's how to do that:

 

 

  1. With your TurboTax software closed, right click the TurboTax icon.
  2. Select Run as administrator.
  3. Try to start a new return when the software opens.

 

If this doesn't work for you, please reply back with the type of computer (Mac or PC) and the OS (Windows 10, Windows 11) and TurboTax will help you further.
