I am trying to file city taxes. I worked from home all year, but I moved to a different city part way through the year. How do I indicate that?

One city charges income tax, but the city I was in for most of the year does not.

You need to tell us what state and what cities. Remember that we in the Community cannot see your screen nor your private tax data, so help us help you.

Sorry about that. The state is Michigan, the city with income tax is Grand Rapids, the city without (where I lived for nine months of the year) is Kentwood.

If you lived in Grand Rapids for part of the year, you will have to file a Grand Rapids part-year resident return. The income you earned while living in the city of Grand Rapids is taxable and must be allocated on your part-year resident return.

To file a part-year Grand Rapids return, please follow the instructions below:

  1. Open your return.
  2. Click on State on the left hand side.
  3. Click Continue next to your Michigan return.
  4. Indicate your Michigan School District as of December 31, 2021.
  5. On the screen Which Cities Did You Live or Work In?, enter Grand Rapids as City #1.
  6. Continue through the return.
  7. On the page A few things before we wrap up your state taxes, click Start or Revisit next to Michigan City Tax Returns.
  8. Select Grand Rapids on the screen Live or Work in Any of These Cities?
  9. Select Grand Rapids Part-Year Resident on the screen Review Grand Rapids Information.
  10. Enter the dates of residence.
  11. Continue through the return.
  12. On the Grand Rapids Wages screen, click edit next to your W-2 income.
  13. Enter Income earned while a Grand Rapids Resident on the screen Grand Rapids Wage Required Information.
  14. Continue the on-screen instructions.
