Box 17 on your 1099-MISC should be the two letter state code for your state and the Payer's state ID. If they are there on the form, go back and add them in the original 1099-MISC interview.

If, however, there is nothing in boxes 16 and 18 (associated with box 17), then delete the entry in box 17. Sometimes people put entries in box 17 whether or not they are needed.

How can I put a 1099-MISC into the "Other Income" line and not include it in a Schedule C? I am being forced the Schedule C route by the software. I do not owe SE Tax of 15.3% on a long term disability payment

Did they put your disability in box 7 in the 1099-MISC? They should have put it into Box 3.

If they put it in Box 7, then you can choose to change that to Box 3 so that you won't force a Schedule C, but note that you might get a letter from the IRS wondering why you changed the form. Be ready to explain it to them.

So, after you file, you might call the organization that sent you the disability payments and ask them why they put your distribution in box 7.
