I am self employed and i live in texas. am i required to file an income tax. I was told if i live in texas i am not required to file .

Yes you have to file a federal tax return.  But Texas does not have a state income tax.

since texas does not have a state income tax.  are  you  telling me that i am still required to file if i am self employed?

You are required to file a Federal IRS return for any income whether or not you are Self Employed.  If you have over $400 of self employment income you HAVE to file a federal return and pay self employment tax on it in addition to any regular income tax on it.

Please be aware that in USA there are two governments, Federal and State.
Either or both may impose by law a tax on your income.
