i am head of household but it looks like turbo tax automatically put in single even though I support my mom who lives w me. How can i change my filing to head of house?

To change your filing status to Head of Household in TurboTax, follow these steps:

1. Go to the Personal Info section (My Info in TurboTax Online).
2. Edit the section that shows your name.
3. Answer the questions about your marital status.
4. Provide information about your dependents.
5. Answer the qualifying questions for the Head of Household status.

To determine if you qualify for Head of Household in 2024, you need to meet the following criteria

 

1. Unmarried or considered unmarried on the last day of the year.
2. Paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home for the year.
3. Had a qualifying person living with you for more than half the year (except for temporary absences).

Since you support your mom who lives with you, she may be considered a qualifying person if:

• She is your biological or adoptive parent.
• You can claim her as a dependent.
• You paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home that was her main home for the entire year.

 

If your mom's gross income is $5,050, she doesn't meet the income requirement to be claimed as a dependent. For 2024, a dependent's gross income must be less than $5,050. Since her income exceeds this amount, TurboTax won't allow you to claim her as a dependent, which is why you can't file as Head of Household based on her.
