I am currently living outside of the US. I understand that I have until June 15, 2017 to file my taxes. However, do I need to file for that "living abroad" extension before April 17, 2017? I'm curious if it an automatic extension. I don't want to get pena

No, you do not need to file the Form 4868 extension.  It is an automatic extension.  However, your taxes is still due by April 18, 2017.  If you owed, interest will still be charged on payments made after the regular due date ( April 18th, 2017 ) without regard to the extension.
