I am a student getting support from my father outside the states

Hi,

I am student in US with Green Card. I am getting support from my father from outside USA. He is using Western Union to do such monthly support transfers to me. Should I report all these to IRS ?

Hello there!

In general, money received from a parent as support for a child is not included in income for tax purposes and is not reportable to the IRS.

However, given that your parent is based outside the USA and may be considered a foreign person, you may be required to file a Form 3520 to report the amounts received depending on the magnitude of the amounts and what they were used for. Please see instructions for Form 3520 below.
