I am a senior and expecting free self-preparation and filing fees for federal and state. Why are you charging me for software and state filing?

If you have forms not included in the free version, you won't qualify to use the free version.  Follow these steps to downgrade to the free TurboTax Online product:

 

1. Open your return if you haven't already.
2. In the left menu, select Switch Products.
3. Select Downgrade.

 

Depending on what your tax situation is, you may need to upgrade if you have:  

 

• Unemployment income
• Retirement Savings Contribution Credit for 401(k) and IRA contributions
• Education credits
• Child Dependent Care Credit

Probably because you do not qualify for the free version of TT Not many people do. Basically just  a  W-2 and a standard deduction. Other forms require a paid version. If you want a free program you might go to IRS.GOV and see if you qualify for any of their free programs.
