I already paid the $202 Federal taxes owing in April of this year. How do I get that to reflect on my refund from the state?

When my taxes were first figured by Turbotax it showed more than I had paid in April so I said to pay an additional amount from my state taxes. After reviewing everything it showed the same amount that I had paid in April of this year for my federal taxes but it is still showing as if it is going to be paid again by my refund from state taxes. How do I change that?

Did you make a payment in April with an extension to file?  Your only proof of payment is your bank account or credit card showing the payment.

To enter the amount you paid with an extension (including state extension)  go to

Federal Taxes (or Personal for desktop H&B version)

Deductions and Credits

Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button

Next page second section Payments with Extension

Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid

BUT you can not have the federal tax due deducted from a state refund.  Federal and state are completely separate.  Turbo Tax just shows you the net at the end for your information.  You still have to pay the full tax due.

You must have misunderstood something.  Federal taxes owed can never be paid from a state tax refund.

How did you pay the federal taxes owed in April?  Those could only be paid by mailing a check with a payment voucher to the IRS, direct debit from a bank account or payment using a credit card.

Do you have a canceled check, bank or credit card statement showing the payment in April?
