How to report Canadian pension income reported on NR4 with code 39 (from a Canadian company) using desktop Turbotax 2024

I have a NR4 form with income code 39, which is Canadian pension income from a Canadian company, I used "Retirement Plans and Social Security > Canadian Registered Pension Income. "  for last year Tax, but I don't think I that was correct, Please help me figure out the correct way of reporting the Income, and the Tax withholding on the NR4 form.  I am using Turbotax premier 2024 for Mac.

Yes, here is how to report the distribution.

  1. Open your Turbo Tax return.
  2. Go to income
  3. Go to Retirement, Social Security etc.
  4. Go to Canadian Registered pension
  5. Here, report the distribution amount but leave the Taxable Part of the distribution blank because this isn't taxable in the US.

Thank you @DaveF1006, isn't that section for RRSPs? my income is for Canadian pension income from a "Canadian company", would that be the same as RRSPs.  Also, what about the state implications?  how would I handle the State (filing MA)?

Yes, you are correct. I should have asked if this was a Canadian private pension. In this case, you may report this by performing the following steps.

  1. Log into your account
  2. Select Wages and income
  3. Less Common income
  4. Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099>start
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the page to Other Reportable Income
  6. Other taxable income, answer yes
  7. Then give a brief description of the income and the amount listed.. Here, call it Canadian Pension and the amount.

To receive a Foreign Tax Credit for the tax you paid in Canada, go to:

  1. Deductions and Credits.
  2. Estimates and Other Taxes paid,
  3. Foreign Taxes

This is taxable income in Massachusetts because Massachusetts does tax retirement income.  The information you entered on your federal return will populate into your Massachusetts state return.
