How to NY taxes work on a bonus received in 2023 but job begins in 2024

Hello,

I received a 10K signing bonus in April, 2023 and a corresponding W-2 at the end of the year with both federal and NY state taxes paid. I do not yet live in NY and will begin my new job in April, 2024.  In TurboTax, how do I "Allocate Wages to New York" on my NY return? Are they considered 100% New York State Income even though I have never lived in NY (yet that is)?

If you did not live or work in NY even one day in 2023, they are not NY wages.  (I would not count an interview as work, but did you do orientation or something after you were hired?)

You would allocate 100% of the wage to your home state and zero to NY.  You will need to file an NY non-resident return showing zero income and the taxes withheld to get a refund of the taxes that were withheld.  You pay tax on the income in your home state.

If you worked in NY even one day (even for a different employer) then the bonus is probably NY income, and you need to pay NY tax.  Your home state should give you an offsetting credit.

Thank you! No I did not work one day in NY. Even the interviews were in 2022. I am looking forward to getting all that $ back from NY.
