Please follow these instructions in order.  It will lead you to "Add a Student".

  1. Open or continue your return, if you're not already in it.
  2. Search for 1098T and select the Jump to link at the top of the search results.
  3. Select Yes on the Do you want to enter your higher education expenses? screen.
  4. On the Your Education Expenses Summary screen, select Add A Student.
  5. Select the name of your student (this could be you, your spouse, or a dependent) and Continue.
  6. Answer some questions about the student and then you'll reach the Did [student] get a 1098-T from [school] for 2019? screen. Select Yes and Continue.
  7. Enter the information from your 1098-T on the next screen. When you're finished, select Continue.

My version (deluxe) is not allowing me to add a student to enter tuition paid for 2019. I have a 1098-t and TT is allowing me to enter "additional" education expenses but is not taking me to the screen to add a student. I have paid almost $10k in tuition this year - I have to get this resolved! Help please!

Start by going to the Education section of your return using these steps:

  • On the top row of the TurboTax online screen, click on Search (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax locate the search box in the upper right corner)
  • This opens a box where you can type in “education” (be sure to enter exactly as shown here) and click the magnifying glass (or for CD/downloaded TurboTax, click Find)
  • The search results will give you an option to “Jump to education
  • Click on the blue “Jump to education” link

Then, if you are not prompted to enter your 1098-T, go through the entire education expenses section of your return until you reach the screen titled “Your Education Expenses Summary”, then follow these steps:

  • Click Edit next to the student name (or add a student here).
  • On the screen titled “Here’s your Education Summary”, click Edit beside Tuition.
  • Enter the information from your Form 1098-T.

My 2019 deluxe version does the same thing.   It wouldn't take me to the section to add tuition.   It finally worked out of the blue one session and I entered in some numbers just to get an estimate while I waited for the 1098T to show up.   Now it won't let me edit the tuition I already entered.   This is bull....    Been using TT for years.   This needs to be fixed.

To edit your tuition information, please follow the steps below. Note: You must go all the way through the entries to get to the section where you can edit the information.

  1. Log into TurboTax and click on any topic to continue
  2. Click on Federal from the menu on the left-hand side and then click on Deductions & Credits at the top
  3. Scroll down to Education and click on Show More
  4. Click on Start or Revisit next to Expenses and Scholarships and then click Continue
  5. At the section, "Did 'Student' Pay for Books or Materials to Attend School?" don't enter amounts, scroll down and click Continue
  6. Keep going and at section "Did 'Student' Receive a Scholarship or Grant in 2019?", Don't enter amounts, click Continue
  7. Keep selecting Continue to all screens (If program says it can't maximize because there are no expenses, that's okay. Keep going until you get back to the Deductions & Credits screen. Click on Education and continue)
  8. When you get to the section "Your Education Expenses Summary," click Edit
  9. Click Edit next to Students name and then click Edit next to Tuition
  10. Select Yes at section "Did 'Student' get a 1098-T from 'College' for 2019?" and Continue
  11. Enter you information as reported on the 1098-T
