How to e-file through TurboTax and pay tax separately with credit card through another payment processor?

I am thinking of paying my tax with a credit card. Upon some research, it seems TurboTax charges 2.49% in fees if paying income tax via credit card through its website, while payUSAtax charges 1.85%.

Is it possible to e-file through TurboTax and pay tax separately through another payment processor like payUSAtax? I assume the answer is yes, but it seems TurboTax only gives me the options of "credit karma money", "direct debit from my bank account", "charge my credit card", "pay by check", "request IRS payment plan" on the "how would you like to pay your federal tax" page, it doesn't provide an option of "pay with my credit card through another online service". So if I were to pay my federal tax through payUSAtax, which box should I check on TurboTax? And is it the same for State tax?

Thanks so much for your help! Any suggestions/advice is greatly appreciated!

Yes that's right.  Pick you will mail a check.  Then it's  up to you how or when you pay it.

You can pay the IRS directly at

If you owe tax due, you have to pay it yourself by the filing deadline on April 15, 2024.

If you have federal tax due you can pay by mailing your payment with the 1040V voucher, (which has the address printed on it, having the payment taken out of a designated bank account, or you can pay directly on the IRS website.

You must pay your state tax due using the state’s preferred method of receiving payment.  For most states that will be by making a payment to the state’s own tax website, or by mailing a check or money order.

Thanks for your reply. However my question was what box I should check in TurboTax if I were to pay my tax by credit card through another payment processor other than TurboTax. If I check the "pay by credit card" box, TurboTax would ask me to pay with their portal. I assume I could check the "pay by check" box to bypass payment through TurboTax, then I can e-file through TurboTax and pay by a credit card through another processor instead of sending IRS a check, but just wanted to confirm if that would be the correct way to do it.

You are not paying through a "portal" from TT if you enter credit card information into the software to pay your tax due. TT is not involved.   TT only passes that information on to the IRS or state.   TurboTax does not pay your tax for you.   TurboTax never knows when or even if you pay your tax due.  TT receives no information from the IRS or state after they accept your return for processing.

Re-read the information given to you in the earlier reply.  There are a variety of ways in which you can pay your tax due, including by paying directly on the IRS or state's tax sites.

You can just tell the software that you will pay by check.  Then go ahead and pay by whatever means you choose to use.

Same question here as original post: e-file with TT but pay Federal tax due through IRS third party payment processor included on Pay Your Taxes by Debit or Credit Card or Digital Wallet | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov).

Confirming that I can efile with TT and on screen that asks, "How Do You Want To Pay Your Federal Taxes?" I check the box next to "I will mail a check" even though I will be using a credit card through one of the three third-party payment processors shown on the IRS website.

Is this correct?

Fantastic! I'll pick "pay by check" on TurboTax and pay with a credit card through one of the processors listed on the IRS website then!
