We asked requested an extension for our 2018 personal income taxes because we didn't have my mother-in-law's estate information (she died in May 2018). We paid an estimated tax of $2183.
We now have the information we need to complete a K-1 form. I inserted it into turbotax and it looks like the total amount we have to pay is $3619. We already paid $2183. So, we owe another $1436.
My question. When I e-file our 2018 return, will I be able to adjust the amount due to $1436?
Use the same account and user ID to finish preparing and e-file your 2018 return.
When you requested your extension you were supposed to pay your estimated tax due. Did you enter the payment you made into your tax return? Go to Federal>Deductions and Credits>Estimates and Other Taxes Paid>Other Income Taxes
After the October 15, 2019 deadline a 2018 return has to be printed, signed and mailed.
Look at Schedule 5, line 71. If it shows the amount you paid with your extension, that will carry to your 1040, and it will show the amount still due. If it doesn't, you have to figure out how to show the amount you paid with your extension (if you mailed it in, turbotax may not know that you did that).
