Morning Everyone,
I had a new born in January of 2021 and I was told that I would be able to claim her for the 3rd stimulus. However, this year my hubby claimed our first born who I had claimed the year before and I claimed our newborn so when I finally get to the portion of turbotax where it ask to verify the amount received for stimulus it comes out correct as 2,800, because I received $1400
If you are married, it's not quite clear why you are not filing married filing jointly. The information below explains the process based on how you did file.
The stimulus is allowed for a child on the tax return where they are a dependent. Since you did receive $2,800 last year, based on your 2020 tax return, and because you claimed your first born and yourself that was correct. The reconciliation of the stimulus takes place on the 2021 tax return because it was estimated based on 2020.
You are claiming only one child, your newborn, in 2021 and therefore the $2,800 is the maximum you are entitled to receive. If you had claimed both children you would have been entitled to an additional $1,400. This went to your spouse because he claimed your first child in 2021.
