You cannot apply for an ITIN through TurboTax unfortunately. You will have to file a Form W-7 separately to obtain the identification number.

As you cannot e-file your tax return without a SSN or ITIN, here are the steps how you submit your taxes and apply for ITIN simultaneously with TurboTax program:

-In the program, as you enter the information, leave the SSN space blank

-After entering all your information, print out returns and required forms ( write APPLIED in the SSN space)

-As TurboTax does not support the Form W-7, fill out the forms by following

https://www.irs.gov/Individuals/General-ITIN-Information and attach to other required  documentation

-Submit everything including your tax forms to IRS Austin location in Texas.  ( Form W-7 instructions)

Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers are only issued by the IRS if you are not eligible for a Social Security number.

Hi @LinaJ2018,

APPLIED should be by hand or editing the PDF?

If you can modify the SSN field by editing the PDF, you may do so by all means. If you print out the paper return with some fake SSN in the spot, you may use a whiteout and write "APPLIED" there.

Guys , don’t file ITIN separately as suggested by TurboTax to IRS along with your tax returns . It is better to go through  CAA. With the recent changes , IRS is not accepting copies of required documents . We need to send original or certified copies of passport and visa.Don’t waste time and money in this regard.

Hey, which CAA did you use?

Don’t waste your time and money with turbo tax if you are a first time tax filer with ITIN. I paid turbotax and applied ITIN with my returns as per TT . IRS no longer accepting copies for issuing ITIN and they need  certified copies or originals docs , for that again you need CAA to certify these docs  which is expensive. Instead,  I would suggest you to go near H&R block apply return this time and they file ITIN free with your tax return(bit expensive than turbotax but worth if you need a new ITIN) .

Per Instructions for Form W-7, you can apply for ITIN by mail, in person, or through an acceptance agent.

Yes, I had a similar issue.  In my experience Tax professionals on turbo tax are not dependable at all. Even though I had online live support package, the tax specialist could answer such questions related to form W-7. I had telephone calls with two separate tax specialists, they don't know much about IRS in my experience and ended up asking me to read on the IRS website.

I would suggest going with the H&R Block tax agent and they not only file a tax return and W-7 but also certify the copies which is a REQUIREMENT if you don't want to send your original documents. DON'T NOTARIZED your copies, IRS doesn't accept notarized copies.

The above information is just based on my experience and I'm sharing my experience, please consult your tax specialist before you plan do anything.
