I need to file form 8843 and 1040NREZ with 1042S received. I am confused because from my school's Glacier tax system, it determined I will become resident alien since July 3 18. I received campus stipend before and after July 3. How am I gonna file this tax return? Last question: I didn't file form 8843 and 2017's 1040NREZ since 2014 because luck of this knowledge, am I able to file them through some ways? If turbotax is helpful for my case, please provide some instructions.
What date did you arrive in the US and what visa do you have and did you have when you arrived?
1. 09 2013 -J1 visa without income.
2. 09 2014 -F1 visa without income.
3. I did't file form 8843 for 13,14,15,16 and (1040NREZ) for 17.
Did you receive any income besides your 1042-S ? You may have no filing requirement.
No, I do not. Is it too late to file my 2017 tax? I want to file 17 and 18's together this time. If so, should I submit form 8843 for 13,14,15,16 to prove that my J/F1 visa days don't count for president days for conclusion of my non resident status of 2017 tax file.
If you do not have any income except the income on your Form 1042-S and by code 4 is exempt under a tax treaty, you do not have a tax filing requirement for 2018.
For 2018 if you did have a filing requirement you would need to file a US resident return. As you are a US resident starting in 2018, you no longer need to file Form 8843. That form is only for nonresidents.
For year 2017, you will need to file a nonresident return and you can attach Form 8843 to the 1040NR return.
TurboTax does not support nonresident returns.
However we have a partnership with Sprintax offering a nonresident tax filing solution to our TurboTax customers.

Hello Karen, I basically understand your explanation and appreciate it. When I started jobs in 2018, I chose treaty benefit option. This why my school gave me a 1042S instead of W2. (I believe this is my mistake because I shouldn't choose treaty benefits since I became alien resident). How should I do right now? Should I continue file as non-resident with 2018 1042S or notify my school to correct my information and provide me a new W2? Best Regards!
