How not to claim stimulus credit for my wife as she is applying for ITIN ( doesnt have SSN)?

Myself and my wife are on F1 and F2 visa. We satisfied the presence test on 2020 and became resident alien and that the first year to file 1040. Since nor me nor my wife and children have received any stimulus checks in 2020, I will be claiming them as rebate on 2020 return. Myself and my kids have SSN, but my wife does not have SSN, and she will be applying for ITIN while filing. On turbotax online, I leave her SSN blank and I plan to mail the return. However, it only ask me if I received any stimulus and when I anwer no, it calculate the full amount including my wife. As far as I know, my wife can not get that credit as she does not have SSN. is that correct? How to correct the amount on turbotax or how to solve that?

Thank you

You are correct that filers are ineligible for the Recovery Rebate Credit if they do not have a Social Security number that is valid for employment issued before the due date of your 2020 tax return (including extensions).

Answer Yes when TurboTax asks if you received any stimulus (even though you did not) and enter $1,200 as the first payment for your wife and $600 for the second. TurboTax will not add those amounts to your refund.

Under a new law enacted in December 2020, a married couple filing a joint return may be eligible for a partial credit when only one spouse has a Social Security number valid for employment.  If you and your spouse did not receive one or both Economic Impact Payments because one of you did not have a Social Security number valid for employment, you should complete the Recovery Rebate Credit Worksheet or use tax preparation software to determine if you may claim a Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 tax return for the spouse with the Social Security number valid for employment.
