How file an extension for federal and NYS using the desktop turbo tax software

To file for an extension with TurboTax Desktop

1. Open TurboTax.
2. Continue to your return.
3. Under Personal
4. Select Other Tax Situations
5. Scroll to Other Tax Forms
6. Select file an extension
7. Follow the interview

New York does not recognize a federal extension. 

If you cannot meet the filing deadline for a NY business return, you should request a six-month extension of time by filing Form CT-5
