How do I uninstall a state that I downloaded in Turbotax Premium Desktop edition?

Even though I am a full time Florida resident since Jan 2022, I downloaded WI state (as my one free version) just to see what my WI state taxes would have been. Now I want to uninstall it, but there seems no way to do that. Even if I start a new return Turbotax thinks I am a WI resident and wants me to pay $45 to download FL state!

Does anyone know how to completely uninstall a state? I want to ask Live Tax Advice to review my return, but maybe they will question my hypothetical uncompleted WI state return and not my FL state return?

You might be able to click on File, Remove state. I just updated my program and the option is grayed out when it used to be there.

If you can't remove it:

  • You should have a FL address.
  • Be sure you have selected nonresident of WI with no WI income and there will not be any concern. People download extra states sometimes, like you did.

You only file FL for a business return. You can ask for a review when you are ready.

When I click on File, Remove State Return, there is no state return to remove! However, when I click on STATE TAXES - "Let's work on you state return", the word Wisconsin is in the top left corner - so WI is still installed! Then if I click Continue, it says "Let's take care of your Florida taxes for just $45".

See this thread (scroll down) for a way to try to delete unneeded state programs from updating.

But it will probably come back.  The only way for sure is to move to another computer.

If you choose File: Remove State Return, this removes any files created for that state but does not uninstall it, so that state is still on your computer, so you will still have to pay $45 to install another state. Maybe if you save your files, uninstall Turbotax and then do a new install, it will start with no state included? Has anyone tried that?
