How do I transfer last year's return to TurboTax Online?

(If you're looking to transfer last year's return to TurboTax CD/Downloadfollow these instructions instead.)  It's easy to transfer last year's return and depending on your situation, the transfer could be:

  • Automatic—which will transfer all of your info without you having to do anything extra.
  • From a PDF—which will transfer your personal info and your AGI to give you a head start.
  • From a .tax file—which will transfer all of your info in a few short steps.

Click the link to the right for instructions - If you used other tax software last year

You didn't specify what TurboTax version, but since you mention "drive", I assume you are referring to the 2019 desktop software (CD/download) as opposed to Online TurboTax.   You didn't say if it's the Windows or Mac version.

The 2019 product has to first be fully installed and operational on the new computer.   I don't know what you mean by transferring the drive.  Does that mean cloning from an old drive to the new computer's drive, or using a disk image, or physically moving the hard drive from one computer to the other?  In any case, is 2019 TurboTax installed and operational on the new computer?

And do you have the *.tax2018 data file from last year on the new computer?  In the Windows version the default location is the \Documents\TurboTax folder, but it will depend on where you saved or placed it.

If so, here are the steps in the Windows version:

  • Launch your 2019 TurboTax, and at the main screen chose to start a new return.  This can be done by either clicking a blue "Begin" or "Start a New Return" button, or by going to the top left corner of the interface, clicking on the FILE menu, and in the dropdown choosing "New Tax Return."
  • Then TurboTax will search your computer for any *.tax2018 data file to transfer in.
  • If it finds the data file, it will ask you if you want to transfer the 2018 data file into your new 2019 return.
  • If it doesn't find it, you can click on the "Browse" link on that screen to bring up a file directory box where you can point TurboTax to the location of the 2018 data file.
