How do I know which state my 1099 DIV exempt-interest dividends are from? It's not listed on my statement. Is this the state I live in?

You can select Multiple States from the dropdown if you:

  • Live in a state with no income tax (AK, FL, NV, SD, TN, TX, WA, WY)
  • Live where exempt-interest dividends from other states aren't taxed (DC, IN)
  • Have only a small amount of exempt-interest dividends and aren't concerned with extra state tax
    • Your state will tax these dividends or interest if you don't live in an area listed above

If that is not the case, contact your financial institution/dividend payer.

The dividends/interest reported won't be taxed on your federal return.

When I contacted my financial institution about this they replied that it's the state I live in. If this is in fact the case it would be more clear to people preparing their taxes if this was stated in the "For additional information" section.
