A credit carryover should be claimed on the next year's tax return first. It should have been claimed on your 2018 tax return.

More info:  I paid AMT last year, so the credit carried forward.  Plus I fed the program the credit information as if it had been carried forward,  so your answer doesn't get at the problem at all.

Plus, TT Premier Online doesn't generate a Form 8801, so I can't see where things are going haywire

You should see an option to enter it in the "Other Tax Situations" section, and then "Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT)

That's a little better but I'm still not there.  Looking at AMT in other tax situations shows me that the AMT tax is $7000+ less than my regular tax, which indicates I can now take the credit.  Haven't been able to see the calculations on Form 8801 where  TT is coming up with zero

Once you enter the credit in the "Estimates and Other Taxes Paid" section in TurboTax, to view form 8801 "Credit for Prior Year Minimum Tax", you would have to pay for your TurboTax program to see the forms, if you are working online with TurboTax.

Turbotax isn't giving me my AMT credit and its "employee tax experts" aren't giving me any credit for being able to think --- of course I paid my 70 bucks a long time ago to be able to see the forms....  There was no form 8801 to view.

To post AMT Credit for a previous year go to:

  1. Deductions and Credits
  2. Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
  3. Select Credit for AMT Paid in Prior Year
  4. Yes you did pay AMY in the past
  5. Continue through the screens
