How do I get a W2 from a company that went out of business in early 2015?

I only worked there for 2 months before I moved out of state and got another job.  Months later I learned the company went under.  How do I get a W2 from a company no longer in business?

You may still receive a Form W-2 from them, legally they are still required to send one.

In the event you don't receive one, you can file a substitute W-2 using your last pay stub.  This is reported on Form 4852.

The IRS requests that you wait until February 14 to prepare this form and file a substitute W-2.  You also are supposed to attempt to make an effort to get the form.  If the company is out of business, you can indicate that.

When you enter this form in TurboTax, you would enter it as if it is a W-2.  You can contact us again when that time comes if you need assistance with using your pay stub to enter this information.

After you click Continue after entering the W-2 information, the program will ask Do any of these uncommon situations apply to this W-2?  You would have to check the box for Substitute form, then click yes to prepare Form 4852.

TurboTax will walk you through any descriptions that need to be typed and advise you to send the form to the Social Security Administration.

I find myself in the same predicament. Worst case scenario; what if I am unable to locate the last paystub from the company that is no longer in service?

While they recommend that you use the last pay stub for your substitute W-2, if this is not possible, your best estimate of wages and withholding is acceptable.  However, you have to tell the IRS how you determined the amounts.

If you have your check amounts, you may be able to find a check calculator and back in to the withholding amounts.

You can always contact the IRS for assistance at 1-800-829-1040 and they will try to contact the employer or send you the substitute W-2 form.  You can also complete this form yourself.

Do you have your last pay stub? You can use that and also you can call the IRS to request a wage transcript

A wage transcript is based off of year-end tax forms filed.  If a W-2 is not filed, it likely won't show up on the wage transcript.

Thank you.  I've left phone messages with my old boss about this, but she hasn't returned my calls.  It's been 11 months since I last worked there and with a MI to FL move, I have to dig deep to find that last pay stub.  Thank you very much for your help!

You can go to the IRS website and request a WAGE AND INCOME transcript for 2015.  It will have the information as the company reported to the IRS.  Go to Get Transcript.

If you cannot obtain the W-2 from your employer, then for a fee you can get a complete copy of a W-2 from the Social Security Administration - https://faq.ssa.gov/en-us/Topic/article/KA-02501

You can get a free Wage and Income transcript from the IRS - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

You can obtain transcripts of your W-2s from the IRS.  This link to the IRS web page Welcome to Get Transcript has directions on how to obtain copies of your W-2.  The IRS keeps copies of W-2s for 10 years.

If you have no way to contact anyone to get a past Form W2 you can request a "Wage and Income Transcript" online from the IRS.  It will show the federal information but no state information in boxes 15-17.

Here is a link to get started.

@Benjr72 as some of the members have mentioned above, you may request a wage transcript from the IRS if the company has not sent you a W-2; the link is here

This is very helpful information for the federal return, thank you! The transcript from the IRS unfortunately does not include the state withholdings. Does anyone know how to get the state withholdings amount from the CA Franchise Tax Board? I looked on their website, but it just says to reach out the the employer for a new copy, which is not helpful in cases where the business no longer exists. There is a substitute W-2 form 3525, but it requires the state withholdings. All of the earnings statements for the business were online (I unfortunately did not have the foresight to save an electronic copy), so I'm unable to access to be able to add the amounts from those. I guess I could try to estimate them, but the business had to report them to both the IRS and the Franchise Tax Board, so one would assume it should be possible to access the exact amount reported...somehow. Appreciate any guidance!

CA has a tax return transcript. It would be worth trying. How do I get a copy of my state tax return? | FTB.ca.gov It might have your missing state tax withheld. Good luck!
