Its not clear what you are asking, but in general, you must file a state return in the same manner you filed your IRS return.  If you filed a joint return with the IRS, you must file a joint return with the state.  If you wish to change your filing status from joint to a single or "Married filing single, you must first amend your IRS return and have it accepted by the IRS.  Once it is approved you must include the IRS approval for the change in filing status along with your state return.

According to the state of VA website, if you are a nonresident, and you had an income in VA and your spouse does not you must file married filing seperately. How do you do this in Turbotax?
