Either e-file the federal tax return or print and mail the federal tax return.
Click on File, complete Step 1 and Step 2. On Step 3 choose how to file the tax return.
TurboTax will automatically prepare Form 1040-SR for taxpayers 65 or older and has the same information as Form 1040. Form 1040-SR prints with a larger size type for easier reading.

Yes Turbo Tax automatically gives you the 1040SR if you are 65 and older. No difference except the SR for Seniors is bigger font.
How to file 1040-SR …..please provide me steps to complete my husband and my 1040-SR?
All our documents for 2020 Taxes have not yet been received. Is there anything I need to do at this time?
I would like to read through the instructions for the form 1040-SR, where can I locate that form?
TY, Barb
You can start the return and enter what you have. Do not go through the FILE section until you have received and entered ALL of your tax information. TurboTax will save your work as you go, so you can leave and come back and file later. TurboTax will NOT submit your returns until you go all the way through the filing steps.
Here is the form and instructions for 1040-SR if you would like to look them over before you start. TurboTax will walk you through entering all of the needed information.
But you can also wait to start until you have all of you documents. @R349
@R349 The 1040SR is new starting in 2019. It is the same as the regular 1040 just larger type and the Standard Deduction chart is added to page 1. But has the same line numbers. You automatically get the SR if you or your spouse are 65. If you are using the Desktop program there is a way to force the one you want.

How do i file with 1040-sr
An IRS Form 1040-SR and Form 1040 are exactly the same form so there is no difference when filing.
You can only select Form 1040-SR if you are using the CD\Desktop version.
Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR are virtually identical in function. Form 1040-SR was created for people doing their taxes by hand. It has larger type and larger boxes to write numbers in, making it slightly easier for seniors to read and fill out.
The only advantage to using Form 1040-SR is if your doing the form manually. From the IRS end, it will not matter which form they receive and process.
To use Form 1040-SR in the CD\Desktop version:
If you are 65 or older Turbo Tax will automatically give you the 1040SR form. It is exactly the same as the regular 1040 just bigger type so it goes on 3 pages not 2.
Why is there s problem creating federal tax form 1040-SR. In previous years it automatically created this version of the federal tax return based up my age.
Why do you think there is a problem? If the date of birth you entered in My Info shows that by the end of 2021 you were 65 or older then the software uses a 1040SR. The 1040SR is exactly the same as the "regular" 1040 but the print is bigger. All of the calculations are done the same way. Your refund or tax due are not affected in any way whether you use Form 1040 or Form 1040SR.
You simply enter the information as you would for any other return. There is really nothing different between the forms other than print size.
The main reason to use Form 1040-SR is if you're filling out your tax return by hand rather than online. Form 1040-SR has larger type and larger boxes to write numbers in, making it slightly easier for seniors to read and fill out.
Form 1040-SR is available as an optional alternative to using Form 1040 for taxpayers who are age 65 or older. Form 1040-SR uses the same schedules and instructions as Form 1040 does.
Congress required the IRS to develop a tax form for seniors in the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018. The idea was to make it easier for seniors with simple tax situations to file their tax returns.
As a result, the IRS created a version of Form 1040 that uses larger print and includes a standard deduction table directly on the for so that seniors can quickly look up their standard deduction amounts. Form 1040-SR uses the same line items and instructions as the standard Form 1040.
@Wisbarr84 Are you using the Online version? Did you already do your return? Just fill out his return as usual. Turbo Tax will automatically give him the 1040SR if he is over 65.
Online is only good for one return per account. But you can use the same email address for 5 accounts.

I've just finished our taxes and we're both over 65. And I can't itemize. Yet it's doing it on the straight 1040 and prepared all the other documents to include the 1040A. Last year it allowed me to file a 1040SR. So I'm not sure why it's not doing it this year.
It didn't for me. And we're both over 65. It allowed me to file 1040 SR last year, but it's not doing it this year. And I don't want to enter all the data all over again.
@rh2294 Why are you actually worried about whether your form is 1040 or 1040SR? Nothing about the calculations is different. The ONLY difference between those forms is the size of the print. Your refund or tax due are not affected in any way.
