TurboTax will ask you If you got your stimulus payment after you enter in the rest of you information. Then just answer the questions to complete the Recovery Rebate Credit on your 2020 Tax Return.

you have to file a 2020 tax return, which you can do for free if you are eligible at filefree.intuit.com. There is no separate form for the recovery rebate credit, it is simply part of the 2020 tax return,

but suggest waiting until the end of January - there are still a lot of payments flying around and fixes coming from the IRS.... may save you some work.  The IRS won't accept a tax return until Jan 27 in any event.

Where do I enter this information? It seems like it should be under federal review, but there is no section in federal review that asks me about stimulus. I have turbotax deluxe downloaded on my laptop.

In TurboTax Deluxe Desktop click the "Federal Taxes" tab at the top.  Then "Federal Review" under that. The first page that pops up should be asking about stimulus payments.

it is not giving me the correct amount. should be 1st one 2400 for married and 500 each dependant, 2nd is 1200 married and 600 each dependant. For us that equals 4700. It is only doing me and my husband not our dependant. Its says 3600. How do I change this as we have not recieved either the first or second stimulus.

The child must be under 17, a dependent, qualified for child tax credit and you must have all been in the US. It is easy to hit a wrong answer by accident. See the full rules for eligibility at Economic Impact Payments. Please review your answers if you are not getting credit that you are entitled to receive. I have seen people mark that they were outside the US several times. Look and look again.

If you had a child in 2020 then return to the dependent section and make sure you entered the WHOLE year when asked how long they lived with you  AND   that the CHILD did not provide more than 1/2 of THEIR support ... answer either of these wrong and the stimulus will not be added.

Your daughter that was born February 20 did not qualify for the first stimulus check.  She did qualify for the second check.  When you entered her on your tax return, her social security number must have been correct and she needed to meet all of the conditions and all of the questions needed to answered correctly.  Go through your return taking careful note of the examples that Critter-3 just posted.

Since you have already filed your taxes, you can only make changes to them if they are rejected when the IRS starts accepting returns on February 12.  If they are accepted, then wait until the processing is complete and then use TurboTax to file an amend so that your stimulus for your daughter is included in your amended return.

ANY child born in 2020 is eligible for BOTH stimulus payments no matter when they were born.

So, I did that after the stimulus website said I had to, and the amount came back as 1800 instead of 600. Did I do something wrong on the automated form?

@kettlebrew You should have received $1,200 for each taxpayer on your return plus $500 for each dependent under the age of 17 for the first stimulus check, and $600 for each person I just mentioned for the second check. If you received less than that, then the difference is the amount still due you which should be included with your refund when you file your 2020 tax return.

If you didn't receive the full amount for your first or second-round stimulus payments, you can claim the Recovery Rebate Credit when you file your taxes this year.

We'll make sure you get the money you qualify for by double-checking the amount and quantity of stimulus payments you received.   Here’s how:

  • Enter all of your federal return information as you would normally. During the Federal Review, we’ll check if you meet eligibility requirements for the stimulus payment. If you meet the requirements, you'll see a It looks like you qualified for the stimulus, did you get any payments? screen. We'll ask a few questions about any payments you've already received and then let you know if the Recovery Rebate Credit applies.
    • If you need to make any changes to your stimulus credit responses, search for stimulus and select the jump-to link at the top of the search results to return back to the section. Enter your updated info and Continue.

It’s important that you enter the correct amount of each stimulus payment you received.

Why am I not getting the Recovery Rebate Credit for my child or dependent?

Why isn't the stimulus question showing when I'm trying to claim my Recovery Rebate Credit?

I all readi file my 2020 taxes and received my refund  but i forgot to add my 2second stimules  check how do i file to get my payment

If you did not receive your second stimulus payment then you will have to file an amended return to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit. Please see FAQ How to amend a tax return for instructions.

Also, if you received Notice 1444 in the mail but have not received your payment as mentioned in the notice, then you need to request a trace  Please see How do I request a payment trace to track my first or second Economic Impact Payments?

  1. After entering all your information click "Federal Review" at the top of your screen.
  2. On the screen "Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount" click "Continue".
  3. You will be asked about the amounts of first round and second round stimulus payments you received.  If you did not receive a payment enter "0".
  4. TurboTax will then calculate the amount of stimulus payment remaining that you are still entitled to get.
  5. Any stimulus amount remaining due to you will show as a credit on line 30 of the 1040.

If you filed your return but forgot to include the second stimulus payment that you had received and therefore claimed the wrong Recovery Rebate Credit amount then the IRS most likely made an adjustment to your refund. Check line 30 for the Recovery Rebate and the total refund amount on line 34 of Form 1040. Please see IRS Recovery Rebate Credit Q D2 What happens if I claim the incorrect amount? for additional information. If not then you will need to amend your return (1040X) and send the funds back to the IRS. Please see  FAQ How to amend a tax return for instructions.

I received stimulus #1 and #3 but didn't get #2 for $600. I didn't file 2019 because I didn't work, on ssdi. I had to verify who I am on 3-11-21. I wondered why I didn't get it all on #3 deposit?

I'm not sure why you didn't receive the 2nd. stimulus check, you will have to prepare a tax return in TurboTax to receive it.

When you prepare your tax return for 2020 in TurboTax, you will be prompted to enter how much you received for your stimulus and then the program will calculate the amount of stimulus due you based on your income, number of dependents and payments already received. If any additional stimulus is due you, it will be used to reduce your 2020 income tax liability, and the balance will be refunded to you.

You will see the options when you are done entering your tax information and proceed to the review process.

You can file a tax return in 2020 to get your stimulus check, even if you aren't required to otherwise.

I qualified for the 1st (got it) and 2nd (didn't get it but IRS site didn't know anything about it) based upon my 2019 AGI.  However, I know I won't qualify for 2020 3rd stimulus due to my 2020 AGI but how do i apply for the recovery credit for the second, as turbo tax did not ask me anything about stimulus payments. The IRS site says i am eligible.  How do i do that in Turbo Tax?

You should file your 2020 income tax return.  If you did not receive the second stimulus payment, you can claim a Rebate Recovery Credit on your 2020 income tax return.

The Recovery Rebate Credit will be calculated based upon your input and is based upon your 2020 income tax return.

Please see the attached link for more information on who can claim the credit.

Recovery Rebate Credit eligibility

When you prepare your 2020 income tax return, be sure to do the following to ensure the credit is calculated correctly on your income tax return.

  1. In the Federal section, select the Federal Review interview section at the top of the screen.
  2. This will take you to the input section for the Recovery Rebate credit.
  3. Be sure to indicate the actual amount of each stimulus payment you received on the page that asks if you received a stimulus payment.
  4. There will be two boxes and both need to be completed.  Since you did not receive the second stimulus payment, please enter $0 in the second box to reflect this.

To get to this section in TurboTax, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the search box and enter stimulus. Click the Jump to link.
  2. Answer Yes.
  3. At the next screen, Let's double-check the amount you received, answer No to edit the first-round and second-round amounts.
  4. Since no stimulus amount was received, enter 0 for each box. An amount must be entered in each box. When finished, click Continue.

For more information, see: How do I claim the Recovery Rebate Credit?

If you did not get prompted to enter your stimulus information, that means you either:

  1. Filed as a dependent being claimed on another tax return, or
  2. have an AGI too high to claim the recovery rebate

To get to the stimulus questions in TurboTax at any time, you can search for stimulus and use the Jump to link.  Generally, if you have adjusted gross income up to $75,000 for individuals and up to $150,000 for married couples filing joint returns and surviving spouses, you will receive the full amount of the recovery rebate.  For filers with income above those amounts, the payment amount is reduced.

After you have entered your tax information and are ready for the Federal Review, it will be the first question.

If you are trying to trigger it, you can go to Other Situations, answer any questions and click Done. The next automatic selection is Federal Review and it will ask about payments received.

If you didn't get one or both of the Stimulus payments or qualify for more it will be the Recovery rebate credit on 1040 line 30.  It either adds to your refund or reduced a tax due.
